Meet Maverick, one of the sweetest and smartest Aussies around. He is the definition of a Gentle Giant. He’s a standard size Aussie – he weighs in at 62 pounds – but don’t bother telling him he’s not a lap dog. He doesn’t know it!
We think Maverick is around 1-1/2 years to 2 years old. He’s fully grown but has puppy-like tendencies, such as quietly moving slippers and socks around the house. He also has the spunk and energy of a young pup. He loves to play with tennis and bouncy balls in the house, and also loves a good chew toy or bone. He’s a heavy chewer but hasn’t shown any destructive tendencies.
In his prior life, Maverick lived outside tied up. He’s adapted well to being an indoor dog and loves being part of a human pack. He’s house trained and will let you know when it’s time to go outside. He has crate skills but uses them only in the car (because otherwise he thinks he needs to be right next to you navigating). He’s still refining his house manners such as receiving guests and keeping his nose off the kitchen counter, but has quickly picked up leash skills as well as commands “sit”, “heel”, “climb” and “leave it.” He’s up for any challenge and responds well to consistent training.
Maverick is a big dog who requires a big yard with a fence so he can get his wiggles out. He also enjoys stretching his legs on daily walks. Based on his tendency to chase rabbits and squirrels, we’re not sure he’d do well with cats or other small house pets. Although we were told he was turned in to the shelter along with six cats, so who knows? He adores his full-size Aussie foster brother and loves to wrestle, but also enjoys quiet time. He requires slow introductions to new dogs. He does well with children but I his foster experience hasn’t been around kids younger than 12.
Maverick is up-to-date on his age-appropriate vaccinations and has been fecal tested (negative), heart-worm tested (negative), micro-chipped and neutered. He takes monthly preventatives for heart-worm prevention and flea/tick prevention.
Maverick is being fostered in St.Louis, Missouri.
